Self-Reflection Windows

Self-Reflection Windows

The Self-Reflection Windows are a series of six windows that contain six influences that contribute toward positive well-being. The main objective of this project is to create a space and a “Window of Opportunity” for viewers to think about their own personal well-being. Each window contains information along with metaphorical illustrations that are monochromatic to trigger an interactive and memorable experience.

Research Questions

What is the problem?

Being in a bad mental health state can result in negative outcomes. It can affect well-being in a way that makes individuals not feel motivated to do their best. Ultimately, not knowing what elements or influences help with positive well-being, can make people feel as if they still remain in the same negative state as before.

How could it be resolved?

Upon doing research there was plenty of informative guides and articles on how to help achieve better mental health, specifically well-being. The majority of those articles were shown through text, which can be great, but not for people who are visual learners. Integrating images or elements can make the information stand out more, resulting in better learning and at the same time creating a more memorable experience.

Whom is it targeting?

According to Health America, in 2022, it was reported that about 10.6% of kids ages 13-18  have developed mental health complications. As for adults, it’s about 19.86%. Mental health can come in all shapes and forms, but one thing they all share is that it can produce poor performance.

What is the final outcome?

With the data that was collected, I found six influences that help with creating positive well-being. Those influences are emotions, relationships, engagement, meaning, achievement, and motivation. One way to promote these influences is to create six physical windows, inspired by the phrase “A Window of Opportunity”. These windows will be in a physical space and have metaphoric illustrations along with informative context to help viewers refresh or learn about the influences that help with well-being.

Illustration Process

Each illustration starts off with a word association list that corresponds to each influence. A couple of those words are then selected to help ideate several sketches, which ultimately lead to a final direction. Each influence has its own metaphoric illustration that is monochromatic to help associate each influence.

Context Development

The process of informative posters displays the evolution of how the context will be delivered. The context was dived into two sections. The first section delivered information about how that influence contributes to well-being, while the second section displayed tips and advice to help achieve that influence.

Poster Process

The poster contains three sections of information. Section one displays facts regarding mental health, section two informs viewers why well-being is really important, and section three tells the viewers what the Self-Reflection Windows are about.

Window Construction

A big part of this project was to create physical wooden windows. These windows measure to be 2ft x 2ft. The windows are structured to mimic the physical appearance of real-life windows and have functioning two-sided doors that can be opened, exposing the material regarding each influence. The main purpose as to why the context is displayed inside the windows is from the phrase “A Window of Opportunity” These windows each contain a new perspective, a new way to look into well-being. It represents an opportunity for viewers to think and have time to self-reflect on personal well-being and goals.

Process of Mock ups

Since half the project was physical, digital mock-ups were necessary to visualize what the final product could look like. Within the mock-up process, major changes were made to accommodate how information could be received.
